FIA confirm major F1 rule reversal for 2028 season
Key Things to Know
  • The FIA will restore standard 305km race distances in 2028 after a single season of shortened grands prix.
  • Race distances will be temporarily reduced to 290km for only the 2027 season.
  • The 2027 reduction was introduced due to increased fuel consumption from power unit ratio adjustments.
The Story in 60 Seconds

The FIA has confirmed it will reverse its decision to shorten Formula 1 grands prix, restoring the standard 305km minimum race distance for the 2028 season. The reduction to 290km will now apply strictly to the 2027 season, making it a temporary single-year measure before the conventional race distances are reinstated across the sport.

The initial reduction was implemented because 2027 power unit adjustments—moving to a 60/40 combustion-to-electrical power split—cause cars to burn more fuel without having redesigned larger fuel tanks. Driver Lewis Hamilton had previously criticized the shortened format, stating that modern races are physically easier and arguing that grands prix should be made longer rather than shorter.
