Not what what George Russell needed in his quest to apply pressure on Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli.

Mercedes driver George Russell received a five-second time penalty after an opening-lap battle with McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at the United States Grand Prix. Starting from sixth position at the Circuit of the Americas, Russell left the track between Turns 12 and 13 while defending against the McLaren drivers, ultimately keeping sixth place before stewards intervened.
Russell defended his driving over team radio to race engineer Marcus Dudley, arguing that Piastri took the risk by attempting an outside overtake. The penalty carries title implications, as Russell must finish in the top eight to keep the drivers' championship battle alive heading into the Mexico City Grand Prix if teammate Kimi Antonelli wins the race.
