Madring designer explains why major 2027 F1 circuit changes will be limited

Original circuit designer Jarno Zaffelli has explained that major changes to the Madring circuit for the 2027 Formula 1 season are unlikely. Despite overtaking difficulties during Madrid's inaugural Grand Prix, physical constraints surrounding the IFEMA site prevent significant modifications. Zaffelli revealed that several ideas designed to increase passing opportunities were abandoned during the initial design phase.

The project, which was later transferred to the Tilke studio, had to adapt to existing buildings and road networks. These physical limitations reduced design freedom, forcing alterations to areas like Turn 5, which was originally planned to have a more aggressive geometry to encourage wheel-to-wheel racing.
