George Russell is set to start from the back of the grid at Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix due to a power unit change in a further blow to his championship hopes.

Mercedes driver George Russell will start from the back of the grid at the Singapore Grand Prix following a power unit penalty. Russell suffered an engine failure late in the previous race while running third, prompting Mercedes to fit a new power unit that exceeds his season allocation. The penalty applies strictly to Sunday's main race and will not affect Saturday's Sprint.
The setback further dents Russell's title ambitions, leaving him 84 points behind teammate Kimi Antonelli with seven rounds remaining. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed the penalty, noting that the team plans to evaluate both their newest aerodynamic upgrade and prior specifications across the Marina Bay weekend to address recent performance deficits against Red Bull.
