Bryson DeChambeau will introduce a custom TaylorMade Qi4D Proto 200+ driver and unreleased Reebok golf shoes at the 126th U.S. Open. This new equipment aims to combine increased clubhead speed with enhanced footwork stability. DeChambeau’s ongoing equipment development seeks to optimize his powerful playing style for major championships.
DeChambeau’s new TaylorMade driver, identified as the Qi4D Proto 200+, features an ultra-smooth sole and a multilayer carbon composite face with distinct bulge and roll. These design elements are engineered to maximise ball speed and maintain shot curvature. The goal is to achieve greater distance while preserving accuracy.
Alongside the driver, DeChambeau has been testing new Reebok golf shoes. These shoes are a personal design collaboration, focusing on footwork stability. They incorporate a wider toe box and a sharper edge on the inner tip near the big toe. This construction is intended to counteract slippage and provide a blocking mechanism during his backswing, aiding in the transfer of power.
DeChambeau stated regarding his driver: “I’ve been working on something that can maybe go a little faster with the same curvature and it’s quite interesting what’s gone on so far. So it’s working well. We’ll see how it works in the golf course.” He also commented on the synergy between the new items, noting: “Hopefully a little bit more stability with the shoes and pairing that with the driver, that can go maybe a little farther and have that same straightness, it could make for a cool combo,”
This introduction of new equipment continues a pattern of customisation for DeChambeau, a two-time U.S. Open champion. Earlier in the year, he developed a 3D-printed 5-iron for the Masters, part of a broader effort to refine his iron setup. His pursuit involves a dedicated team working on intricate details like centre of gravity (CG), moment of inertia (MOI), offset, and face curvature.
This methodical approach underscores his commitment to gaining a competitive edge through technology. DeChambeau elaborated on his iron development: “I’m in a place where we’re getting really close, got some good hires and we’re creating something quite special in the irons that I cannot wait to put in play.” He further explained the complexity: “But right now it’s just taking a little bit of time, making sure the CG, MOIs are right and good offset for me, or a perfect place of offset to onset and the right curvature of face, and the right thickness of face,” The performance of this new driver and shoes at Shinnecock Hills will be closely observed as DeChambeau seeks his third U.S. Open title.
