Jordan Spieth is currently experiencing a frustrating statistical regression in his ball-striking performance. As the PGA Championship season reaches its peak, the veteran golfer is battling inconsistent mechanics and health issues to rebuild his once-dominant form.
This version of Spieth is entirely different from the player who dominated the last decade. His Strokes Gained: Approach and off-the-tee metrics reveal a severe inconsistency that complicates his tournament progression. Fans are seeing brief glimpses of sheer brilliance immediately followed by costly unforced errors. Instead of merely relying on his historically elite scrambling percentage and putting performance to salvage erratic rounds, he is actively overhauling his foundational swing fundamentals. The dramatic fluctuations on his recent scorecards tell a complex story. The rebuild is painful.
“I got pretty off for a long time,” Spieth said after that 62, so obviously aware of his ups and his downs.
Those previous swing adjustments were designed to survive weekends on the PGA Tour, rather than dominate them. “Iโve been trying to build it back, and then Iโd compensate and do what worked.”
Relying on those quick technical patches is no longer part of his strategy. “This last offseason I said no more compensating because, to be consistent, Iโve got to get it back to a certain place, and itโs been work from then to try to get there. Itโs all in mechanics and health.”
With his current statistics ranking him 63rd in driving, 69th in approach, 61st in short game and 42nd in putting, Spieth makes a bunch of cuts but never really threatens to win. Fans will just have to deal with the plodding pace of this rebuild for the long haul.
