The Story in 60 Seconds

Tom Kim earned an exemption from full mandatory South Korean military service by winning the gold medal in the Men's Individual Strokeplay event at the Asian Games. The 24-year-old shot a final-round six-under 64 at Kasugai Country Club in Japan to finish at 18 under par, clinching a three-stroke victory over Higa Kazuki, Wenyi Ding, and Sadom Kaewkanjana.

South Korean men must enlist for 18 to 21 months by age 28, but an Asian Games gold medal allows Kim to fulfill his requirement through basic military training lasting under a month. Kim also competed in the team event alongside Seonghyeon Kim and Doyeob Mun, where South Korea claimed silver behind China.
