Clark’s victory at Shinnecock Hills concluded a tense final round. He overcame a difficult start, bogeying three of his first seven holes, while fans reportedly jeered his misses. This atmosphere stemmed from previous tournaments, notably the 2025 US Open at Oakmont, where Clark damaged the locker room after missing the cut. He had also thrown his driver months earlier.
Paige Spiranac, who has known Clark since he was 12, addressed the criticism on social media. She highlighted a perceived contradiction in fan expectations for golfers. “People complain constantly that golfers are boring and show no emotion. But then you have someone who has a fiery, competitive spirit and that’s also a problem,” Spiranac stated. She challenged the public’s quick judgment of Clark. “I’ve never seen that side of him in person. It’s just crazy people can make such a snap judgement about someone without ever meeting them,” she added.
Spiranac further argued that the criticism against Clark had become excessive. “I understand the need for a villain in sports but beating people down for every little mistake especially after they took accountability is just tiresome. I just feel that it’s been taken too far at this point,” she wrote to her followers. Clark himself spoke about the crowd’s reaction at the trophy ceremony. “But I get it. Some of it’s self deserved. I did some unfortunate things last year that I really regret, and I’ve said sorry multiple times, and I’m still sorry. So, hopefully, I can win you guys over eventually,” he commented. His challenge now involves reconciling his competitive nature with public perception following his second major title.
