J.T. Poston secured the biggest victory of his career at the Memorial Tournament, while Nelly Korda captured her first U.S. Women’s Open title at Riviera Country Club. The wins capped a dramatic weekend that also saw victories for Ben Kohles and Matthew Southgate on their respective tours.
Poston entered a playoff with Ryan Gerard after both finished regulation at 12-under par. He forced the extra holes with a crucial seven-foot birdie putt on the 18th. The playoff extended to a second hole, where a three-putt bogey from Gerard handed Poston his fourth career PGA Tour victory. The win earned Poston a $4 million prize and secured his place in the next three major championships.
In the LPGA’s second major of the year, World No. 1 Nelly Korda held off Charley Hull and Gaby Lopez by a single stroke to win the U.S. Women’s Open. Korda finished at 8-under 276 after a final-round 69. The victory did not come without late tension, as her final 2 ½-foot par putt did a full lap of the cup before dropping. The win marks Korda’s second consecutive major victory and her fourth overall.
Elsewhere, Ben Kohles won the BMW Charity Pro-Am on the Korn Ferry Tour for his fifth career victory on that circuit. He closed with an even-par 71 to finish at 15-under, winning by a four-stroke margin. On the HotelPlanner Tour, Matthew Southgate of England claimed his first title at the Swiss Challenge. Southgate fired a remarkable final-round 62 to win by eight shots, a significant victory for the 37-year-old who overcame cancer over a decade ago.
