Richard Sterne secured his first DP World Tour title in 13 years with a two-shot victory at the Soudal Open in Belgium. The South African overcame a substantial physical toll to defeat countryman Zander Lombard at Rinkven International Golf Club.
The final round presented a stern test of driving accuracy and distance control. Sterne navigated the tight layout with precision off the tee and composed approach play, securing crucial strokes gained on the field when it mattered most. His steady putting performance maintained pressure on the leaders throughout the afternoon. He executed his course management plan effectively, avoiding major hazards while converting key birdie opportunities.
“It’s been a tough ride, Sterne said after his round.”
The 42-year-old has endured severe physical setbacks over the past decade, forcing extensive absences from competitive golf. “A lot of injuries, a lot of hard things that I’ve gone through, but to get back in the winner’s circle is quite unexpected today, to be honest.”
He remained remarkably focused on his immediate execution, avoiding the distractions of the wider tournament context. “I thought I was one behind playing the last, but then got on to the 18th green and had a quick look at the board and was quite surprised.”
His medical history makes his return to the winner’s enclosure highly unusual in modern professional sport. “Three wrist ops, a disc replacement, hip surgery, I’ve been through it all, so I’m pretty happy, he added.”
Despite the overwhelming physical challenges, his underlying ball-striking data recently indicated a return to form. “It’s been very tough, the last couple of years, but there’s been some signs of good things.”
Family provided a powerful incentive throughout his rehabilitation process. “One of the main goals was to win with my children actually seeing it – my oldest is 13 soon, it’s been pretty much that long, so it’s nice to eventually let them see me win.”
Securing a trophy in mid-May vastly improves his standing in the Race to Dubai. This victory ensures extended playing rights and potentially opens pathways to Major championship qualifying later this summer. “And then I suppose just to prove to myself that I can still compete at this age, after all I’ve been through.”
His approach play late in the round proved critical. “It was a long way for me, Sterne said on the shot.”
Facing a significant distance on a crucial hole, he relied on precise club selection and shot shape. “I had a five-wood in the bag, I don’t have a three-wood, it was 276 yards, and I needed to hit a little draw on there to get the distance.”
The result was a tournament-defining strike. “It just came out as good as I could, it ended up great – three, four feet away – and yeah, it was one of the best shots I’ve hit.”
While Sterne celebrated a long-awaited triumph, Lombard faced the reality of a missed opportunity. “There are no emotions or words for those emotions, Lombard said.”
An unforced error off the tee initiated his late scoring collapse. “I’m disappointed with myself. I thought I handled today really well up until then, a really good drive on No 13, just caught the edge of the water.”
Subsequent issues around the green severely damaged his scorecard. “Fought my way through it. Stuck against the lip on 14. Couldn’t do anything with it.”
Lombard could not halt the slide as the pressure mounted. “Just compounded the mistake there. Stayed in it. Tried my best, and I just wasn’t good enough today.”
Still, his overall performance solidifies his position within the DP World Tour rankings. “I’ve achieved what I came out to do, which is be in contention and feel those feelings of fighting for it and what it’s worth, playing for.”
He plans to carry his strong early-week statistical profile into the upcoming European swing. “In reflection, it is still a good week, points on the board, lots of points from this week, and we’ll take it to next week.”
