Rory McIlroy will skip the upcoming Travelers Championship, the final Signature Event of the PGA Tour season. This marks the third high-profile, $20 million tournament he has missed in 2026, continuing a deliberate reduction in his playing schedule following the U.S. Open.
His absence from TPC River Highlands means McIlroy has competed in only five of the eight designated Signature Events this season. The decision is consistent with a lighter tournament load compared to 2025, a year in which he also played the Texas Children’s Houston Open and RBC Canadian Open. The U.S. Open was just his ninth start of the 2026 campaign.
McIlroy has been clear about his intentions to prioritize his life outside of golf and peak for major championships. He previously stated, “I’ll always look at the schedule at the start of the year and see what best fits me and my life, and everything else that I do with family or other opportunities that I’m pursuing outside of golf.” He acknowledged that this approach would lead to absences, commenting, “this year that meant skipping a few signature events. (Next year) I might skip less, I might skip the same amount.”
This strategy is one he feels he has earned. “The luxury of being a PGA Tour player is we’re free to pick and choose our own schedule for the most part,” McIlroy explained. “I took advantage of that this year and I’ll continue to take advantage of that for as long as I can.” After returning to action at The Memorial Tournament, he admitted to feeling “a bit like a part-timer,” underscoring his commitment to a more balanced calendar.
With the Travelers Championship off his schedule, McIlroy’s next expected start is the Genesis Scottish Open in July, the week before The Open Championship. His focus also extends to the DP World Tour, where he is scheduled to play multiple events later in the season in pursuit of a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai title.
