Tiger Woods has endorsed a significant restructuring of the PGA Tour, set to launch in 2028. In his first public appearance since his DUI arrest, Woods joined Tour CEO Brian Rolapp to announce the new competitive model at the 2026 Travelers Championship.
The new framework will establish a PGA Tour Championship Series and a concurrent PGA Tour Challenger Series. The changes are designed to address feedback from fans and players, with the goal of increasing the frequency of events featuring the world’s top golfers competing against one another. It marks a clear strategic shift for the Tour’s future.
PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp stated the new model is a direct response to fan demand. “You told us you wanted to see the best players in the world competing against one another more often,” he said. The objective is to create a more compelling season-long narrative with defined consequences. Rolapp added, “You wanted clearer stakes as the season unfolds. And you wanted a more dramatic finish to the season that rewards excellence and makes every tournament matter.”
Woods, who chaired the Future Competition Committee that developed the plan, appeared at the press conference to lend his support to the changes. “Honored to stand alongside @brianrolapp today at the @TravelersChamp as we announce the @PGATOUR’s new model for 2028 and beyond,” Woods stated on social media after the event.
He framed his contribution as a duty to the sport’s future. “It has been a privilege to lead the Future Competition Committee and I am proud of the work we have done to build the best version of the PGA TOUR for future generations of players and fans.” The announcement marks Woods’s return to public life following a turbulent period, which included a two-vehicle rollover crash in Florida less than three months ago. The changes are slated for implementation in the 2028 season.
