Apprentice rider Johanis Aranguren, 23, has made an outstanding start to her career in the US but was the subject of ridicule after her mistake at Fairmount Park…

Apprentice jockey Johanis Aranguren committed a costly error at Fairmount Park in Illinois by mistaking the finish of a race and pulling up a lap early. Riding Nip N Tuck in a two-mile and half-furlong dirt contest, the 23-year-old sprinted into the lead and celebrated what she thought was a victory with an entire lap remaining.
After realizing her mistake as the rest of the field passed her, Aranguren rejoined the contest to finish fifth out of six runners, nearly 30 lengths behind the winner. Despite the blunder, she recovered later that day to win the tenth race on the card.
