Diamondbacks Dump Long-Time MLB Veteran Before Playoffs

The Arizona Diamondbacks designated outfielder Jesús Sánchez for assignment ahead of Saturday's game against the San Diego Padres. Manager Torey Lovullo confirmed the move, with catcher Adrián Del Castillo called up from Triple-A in a corresponding roster transaction. Sánchez, who was claimed off waivers from Toronto on September 14, recorded just two hits in 16 plate appearances during his brief tenure with Arizona.

The roster decision was prompted by catcher Gabriel Moreno suffering a tender left hamstring during Friday's 11-4 victory over San Diego. Because Sánchez was acquired after the September 1 postseason-eligibility deadline, he was ineligible for Arizona's playoff roster. Sánchez is expected to clear waivers and be released ahead of arbitration this winter.
