The victory ensures the Athletics will avoid a 100-loss season with four games remaining. Offensively, the Athletics struck early against Angels rookie starter Walbert Urena, as Henry Bolte hit a leadoff single and scored on an RBI single by Lawrence Butler.

Athletics starting pitcher Jeffrey Springs threw 4 1/3 innings in his final start of the season, allowing five hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts. The Angels scored via back-to-back home runs from Mike Trout and Vaughn Grissom in the fourth inning before manager Mark Kotsay pulled Springs in the fifth inning.
