ESPN MLB insider Kiley McDaniel believes the Boston Red Sox will check in on Kaima Tara, a Japanese free agent pitcher, due to his skillset.

ESPN insider Kiley McDaniel expects the Boston Red Sox to check in on posted Japanese right-handed pitcher Kaima Taira. The 27-year-old was posted by Nippon Professional Baseball's Seibu Lions following a standout 2026 season where he transitioned to a starting role, registering an NPB-best 1.36 ERA and 141 strikeouts over 146 innings.
Taira features a seven-pitch arsenal, upper-90s fastball velocity, and elite extension, which fits the profile coveted by Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow. McDaniel projects Taira could command a five-year, $72.5 million contract, with the Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals also viewed as potential free agent suitors.
