Assumption University announced the creation of the Larry Lucchino Institute for the Study of Sports, honoring the late Boston Red Sox executive. The program was conceived by Assumption president Greg Weiner following Lucchino's death in spring 2024. Backed by a multimillion-dollar investment from the Lucchino Family Foundation, the interdisciplinary initiative is scheduled to join the university's curriculum in the fall of 2027.
WooSox president Dr. Charles Steinberg was named the institute's founding director. The program will offer students across various academic majors opportunities to study sports-related topics, hear guest speakers, visit Polar Park, and access internship pathways.
