Bleed Cubbie Blue's Al Yellon argues that the Chicago Cubs should move on from starting pitcher Matthew Boyd and pay his contract buyout. Boyd originally signed a two-year, $30 million contract prior to the 2025 season, which contains a $15 million mutual option for 2027 paired with a $2 million buyout.
Yellon notes Boyd had an All-Star campaign in 2025 with a 3.21 ERA across 31 starts, followed by an injury-affected 2026 season with a 3.91 ERA in 22 starts. Because Boyd turns 36 in February, the writer expects the Cubs to decline the mutual option and allow him to enter free agency.
