Scott Boras believes teams should be active before the lockout, and the Chicago Cubs have no reason to be.

Writer Jordan Campbell argues that the Chicago Cubs should heed agent Scott Boras' advice to sign free agents before the anticipated December 2 lockout. Boras warned teams that it is advantageous to acquire talent under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement rather than waiting for future uncertainties. Campbell highlights that the Cubs are viewed as an expected bidder for top Boras client Tarik Skubal during the offseason.
Despite having exceeded the luxury tax threshold in 2026, the Cubs reportedly have over $100 million coming off their payroll books. Campbell notes that this financial flexibility allows the club ample room to pursue a permanent deal for Skubal before the labor deadline, supported by an increasingly functional working relationship between Boras and Cubs president Jed Hoyer.
