One of the biggest questions hanging over the Cleveland Guardians after their season ended on Monday night had nothing to do with the lineup. It centered on a pitcher who never took the mound. Tanner Bibee, Cleveland’s Opening Day starter…

Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt explained that starting pitcher Tanner Bibee went unused during the American League Championship Series because the team planned to save him for potential extra-inning situations. Cleveland was eliminated in Game 6 following a 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, during which eight pitchers were used, but Bibee never appeared because none of the six games went past nine innings.
Bibee had led the Guardians during the regular season with 33 starts and 188 innings, but he logged only one relief outing in the entire postseason. Vogt clarified that the team intended for Bibee to pitch and noted his usage would have expanded had Cleveland advanced to the World Series.
