Former Major League catcher Martín Maldonado is joining the Detroit Tigers as a quality control coach under manager A.J. Hinch, according to sources. The move reunites Maldonado with Hinch, who previously managed him during their time together with the Houston Astros. The Athletic was the first outlet to report the hiring.
Maldonado, who retired in 2025 after a 14-year playing career, spent the past season serving as a special assistant for the Atlanta Braves. The 40-year-old previously stated his long-term goal is to become an MLB manager.
