Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock has been diagnosed with a fractured tibia in his right leg following imaging conducted after the American League Wild Card series. Whitlock managed ongoing pain with the team's training staff over the final month of the regular season in order to continue pitching, but he was only sent for imaging following Boston's postseason exit.
Whitlock will wear a walking boot for approximately six weeks, but the injury will not require surgery. The pitcher expects to have a standard offseason and anticipates being ready in time for spring training. He is the second Boston player in consecutive weeks to reveal playing through pain without prior imaging, following outfielder Roman Anthony.
