The Story in 60 Seconds

The Houston Astros have begun their offseason by declining the team option on right-handed pitcher Ryan Weiss, sending him to free agency following a difficult 2026 campaign. Weiss, who posted a 7.62 ERA across nine appearances before being sent to Triple-A Sugar Land, joins Bryan Abreu, Daulton Varsho, and Steven Okert on the open market. Pitcher Tatsuya Imai did not exercise his opt-out clause and remains under contract for $18 million in 2027.

Houston also saw coaching departures as the Boston Red Sox hired major league field coordinator Jason Bell and the Pittsburgh Pirates added Triple-A pitching coach Sean Buchanan. Meanwhile, former Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. is expected to receive a World Series ring from the Milwaukee Brewers despite appearing in only two games before being designated for assignment.
