The Houston Astros are reportedly interested in signing one of the top young Japanese arms available. But there are some problems.

The Houston Astros are reportedly scheduled to meet with 18-year-old Japanese pitching prospect Shoki Oda this week, according to MLB insider Francys Romero. Oda, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the NPB draft, is planning to bypass the traditional posting system and enter MLB as an international free agent. He is eligible to sign a contract with a Major League club as early as January 15, 2027.
Drew Koch reports that the Astros face significant obstacles in signing Oda, including competition from teams like the Phillies, Mets, Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Yankees. Additionally, potential labor lockouts threaten the signing calendar, and the writer notes Houston's past turbulent experience with pitcher Tatsuya Imai could complicate recruitment efforts.
