While the Royals may be focused on returning to contention in 2027, a former failed experiment is cashing in big on his overseas success.

Former Kansas City Royals slugger Franmil Reyes has reportedly signed a historic four-year, $40 million contract extension with Nippon Professional Baseball's Hokkaido-Nippon Ham Fighters. The deal reportedly makes the 31-year-old designated hitter and outfielder the highest-paid player in NPB history following three standout seasons in Japan.
Reyes originally joined the Ham Fighters in 2024 after a disappointing 19-game stint with Kansas City in 2023 and a brief minor league stop with the Washington Nationals. Across his three NPB seasons, Reyes has hit 89 home runs with 237 RBIs while maintaining a .294 batting average and a .906 OPS.
