The Story in 60 Seconds

The Kansas City Royals announced Thursday that they have declined their $13 million club option on closer Carlos Estévez while exercising a $2.5 million club option on right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin for the 2027 season. Estévez becomes a free agent after receiving a $2 million buyout from Kansas City following an injury-shortened 2026 campaign.

Gonsolin, who signed with the Royals in August 2025, provides Kansas City with depth for either their starting rotation or bullpen. Estévez departs the organization after making just one appearance in 2026 due to foot and shoulder injuries, following a standout 2025 season where he led Major League Baseball with 42 saves.
