Prior to leaving the field, Rengifo completed two at-bats, earning a walk and scoring one of the club’s six runs in the match. Manager Craig Stammen reshuffled his infield alignment following the departure, moving Jake Cronenworth from shortstop to second base while subbing Xander Bogaerts into the lineup at shortstop to take over Rengifo’s spot.
The physical setback halts an impressive run of form for the eight-year veteran. Since joining San Diego, the Venezuelan native has featured in 38 games, compiling 37 hits, four home runs, and 17 RBIs across 127 at-bats. That performance yields a .296 batting average alongside a .376 on-base percentage. Those offensive metrics represent a noticeable step up in overall productivity compared to his earlier 57-game spell with the Milwaukee Brewers this year.
The organization officially announced the medical update during the contest. “Update from the Padres clubhouse: Luis Rengifo exited today’s game with a right knee sprain,” the team stated on social media, adding: “He’s receiving treatment and will fly back to San Diego for further evaluation.”
