The Story in 60 Seconds

The San Diego Padres announced that Miguel Andujar, Lucas Giolito, and Griffin Canning have become free agents after their mutual options were declined. San Diego opted out of mutual options for right-handers Giolito and Canning, while Andujar declined his side of an $8 million mutual option. As a result of the decisions, Andujar earns a $2.9 million buyout, Giolito receives $1.5 million, and Canning receives $1.8 million.

Andujar dealt with a fractured right wrist during the 2026 season, batting .259 with five home runs over 254 plate appearances primarily as a designated hitter. Although all three players are now free agents, reunions with the Padres remain possible as the club addresses depth across the outfield, infield, starting rotation, and bullpen.
