Martinez is far from the biggest Mets mistake of the winter, and that’s true even within Tampa Bay’s veteran rotation.

Jon Heyman argues that the New York Mets made an error by failing to sign free-agent pitcher Nick Martinez last winter. Martinez, who started Game 1 for the Tampa Bay Rays, reportedly held high interest in joining both Tampa Bay and New York before ultimately choosing the Rays.
Martinez posted a 15-6 record with a 3.10 ERA during a standout regular season in Tampa Bay. While Heyman considers moving on from Freddy Peralta to be the Mets' biggest misstep, he writes that missing out on Martinez represents another notable mistake for the Queens franchise.
