Key Things to Know
  • The Washington Nationals have designated former Minnesota Twins reliever Zak Kent for assignment.
  • Kent was removed from the roster to clear room for waiver addition Braxton Roxby.
  • The 28-year-old posted a 5.68 ERA in nine outings with Washington during the 2026 season.
The Story in 60 Seconds

The Washington Nationals announced on Thursday that right-handed reliever Zak Kent has been designated for assignment. The move was made to clear roster space for right-hander Braxton Roxby, whom Washington claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants. Kent, who made the Minnesota Twins' Opening Day roster before being claimed by Washington in April, made nine appearances for the Nationals in 2026, posting a 5.68 ERA across 12 2/3 innings.

Kent spent the remainder of the season split between Washington and Triple-A Rochester. Because the 28-year-old will be out of minor league options next year, he is expected to clear waivers and could potentially elect free agency. Jackson Kruse of Puckett's Pond argues that while Minnesota should not claim Kent off waivers, the Twins could consider re-signing him on a minor-league deal if he clears.
