Two small-market teams will battle for the 2026 World Series, but a larger war between MLB owners and the Players Association is about to begin.

Tensions between Major League Baseball and the players' union are escalating ahead of the collective bargaining agreement's expiration on Dec. 1. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred emphasized the economic disadvantages small-market teams face and supported a payroll cap, even as the Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers met in the 2026 World Series.
MLBPA executive director Bruce Meyer rejected the salary cap proposal, calling it an effort to suppress wages rather than improve competitive balance. Despite Meyer warning of an owner-led lockout that could disrupt the 2027 season, Manfred maintained optimism that a labor agreement can be reached.
