The New York Mets are reportedly hiring former major-league catcher A.J. Ellis to serve as their major-league strategy coordinator, according to The Athletic's Will Sammon. Ellis joins the Mets organization from the San Diego Padres, where he had worked as a special assistant in the front office since 2019.
Ellis played 11 seasons in Major League Baseball, largely with the Los Angeles Dodgers, before retiring following the 2018 campaign with San Diego under current Mets manager Andy Green. Alongside the recent promotion of Mariano Duncan, Ellis's reported addition fills two major-league coaching roles as the club still seeks a replacement for director of hitting Jeff Albert.
