David Stearns needs to remain open to the original Devin Williams plan he had when he signed the New York Mets closer prior to 2026.

Rising Apple's Tim Boyle argues that New York Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns should consider shifting Devin Williams back to a setup role for the 2027 season. Boyle writes that Williams was originally signed to be paired with Edwin Diaz rather than serve exclusively as the primary closer, and suggests the Mets should explore external additions through free agency or trades to compete for ninth-inning duties.
While Williams blew only three saves in 2026 and posted a 2.33 ERA in save situations, his 6.33 ERA in non-save situations raised concerns. The writer points out that previous Mets bullpen plans involved pairing dominant arms, recommending potential targets such as Bryan Abreu or Emilio Pagan to provide late-inning competition.
