Carlos Mendoza to join Phillies coaching staff

Former New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza has been hired as the third base and infield coach for the Philadelphia Phillies, team president Dave Dombrowski announced Thursday. Mendoza was dismissed by the Mets in June following a difficult start to the season, concluding his two-and-a-half-year managerial tenure with a 206-199 record. He previously served as the New York Yankees bench coach under Aaron Boone from 2020 through 2023.

Writer Josh Benjamin argues that Mendoza represents a potential in-house successor to 65-year-old manager Don Mattingly, who is on a two-year contract. Benjamin notes that Mendoza faces the challenge of navigating veteran clubhouse personalities including Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Trea Turner.
