Sonny Gray is a free agent after his option decision, and the Yankees must weigh rotation depth against the cost of a reunion.

Alexander Wilson considers whether the New York Yankees should look into signing free-agent pitcher Sonny Gray following the decline of his $30 million mutual option for 2027 with the Boston Red Sox. The MLB Players Association listed Gray as a free agent on October 30, though Wilson clarifies there is no evidence yet of New York showing actual interest.
Gray posted a 2.72 ERA across 169 innings and 29 starts for Boston in 2026. Wilson argues that while Gray performed well, New York should only pursue him on a short-term deal given he will turn 37, noting the club might be better off allocating resources to the bullpen and lineup.
