New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells committed a critical base-running mistake during Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays. In the top of the eighth inning with New York trailing 1-0, Wells broke up Drew Rasmussen’s no-hit bid with a hit to right field. Wells missed third-base coach Luis Rojas's stop sign and tried to stretch the hit into a triple, but he was thrown out at third base.

The blunder ended the Yankees' best scoring threat of the game, ultimately leading to a 1-0 defeat in St. Petersburg. Wells admitted after the game that his decision to run was the wrong risk, while manager Aaron Boone noted it was not a good decision.
