Former Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland pitcher Sam McDowell, famously known as "Sudden Sam," died Monday at age 84 at his Florida home. McDowell pitched 15 seasons in Major League Baseball, recording 2,453 career strikeouts and earning six All-Star selections during a standout career highlighted by five American League strikeout titles.
After ending his playing career with the Pirates in 1975, McDowell overcame alcoholism and became an addiction counselor. He subsequently worked with the Baseball Assistance Team and the Toronto Blue Jays organization to support players struggling with substance abuse.
