Pittsburgh Pirates 2026 first-round pick Derek Curiel is focusing on physical development and swing mechanics ahead of his professional debut in 2027. Selected fifth overall out of LSU, the 21-year-old outfielder is participating in Pittsburgh's Forge Performance Camp at Pirate City in Bradenton, Florida, after the organization decided to hold him out of Minor League games in 2026.
Curiel has increased his weight from roughly 188 pounds to nearly 200, aiming to reach 210 pounds by Spring Training with guidance from team dietitians. He has also adjusted his swing path to elevate the ball, resulting in improved exit velocity as he prepares for a full professional season.
