Paul Skenes will make his final start of a disappointing season as he tries to lead the host Pittsburgh Pirates to a win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday afternoon in the decisive contest of a three-game series.
Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes will make his final start of the season on Thursday afternoon against the St. Louis Cardinals. Skenes enters the series finale with a 10-11 record and a 3.91 ERA as Pittsburgh aims to secure its first non-losing campaign since 2018. Right-hander Kyle Leahy will take the mound for the visiting Cardinals.
Skenes' ERA has increased from 1.97 last season, alongside an average fastball velocity decrease from 98.1 mph to 96.8 mph. Skenes noted that pitching for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic in March might have disrupted his typical preparation and contributed to his season-long performance dip.
