The Story in 60 Seconds

The Pittsburgh Pirates officially extended a one-year, $23.15 million qualifying offer to second baseman Brandon Lowe for the 2027 season. Lowe is widely expected to decline the offer to seek a multiyear contract in free agency, which would entitle the Pirates to draft pick compensation if he signs elsewhere.

Emma Lingan notes that under MLB rules, Pittsburgh receives a higher draft pick if Lowe signs for at least $50 million. However, Jim Bowden of The Athletic projected Lowe to sign for three years and $45 million, which would reduce the Pirates' compensation to a later round.
