Keller posted a 5.29 ERA in 2026 and missed the final two months with a right shoulder strain, leaving him owed nearly $39 million over the next two seasons. Moving Keller is viewed as the primary method to free payroll to pursue an external starting pitcher, particularly a left-hander.
Parello notes that re-signing Brandon Lowe remains Pittsburgh's top priority, which would consume most of the club's available financial flexibility. The author contends that even if Keller's roughly $18 million salary is offloaded, owner Bob Nutting must increase payroll spending to address additional needs such as the bullpen, third base, and bench depth.
