When he met with reporters in late September, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington revealed that he planned to hire a full-time scouting director. Two weeks later, Cherington accomplished his goal.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have promoted Justin Newman to the role of director of amateur scouting, fulfilling general manager Ben Cherington's plan to fill the full-time position. Newman, who joined the organization in 2017, previously served as the director of player analysis since 2025 with a primary focus on the draft.
Newman replaces Justin Horowitz, who departed in October 2025 to become the Washington Nationals' assistant GM. Assistant GM Kevan Graves oversaw the draft and led the hiring process before Newman's promotion.
