King sets tone with no-hit bid in Padres’ ‘beautiful night of baseball’

Michael King carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning to lead the San Diego Padres to an 8-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series at Petco Park. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning off Cubs pitcher Matthew Boyd, and Xander Bogaerts added a home run in the fourth inning to build an early lead.

King lost his no-hit bid with one out in the seventh inning on an infield single by Nico Hoerner. Pitcher Joe Musgrove made his first appearance in nearly two years following Tommy John surgery, working out of a bases-loaded jam in relief. Craig Stammen's Padres took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series without using their high-leverage bullpen arms.
