The Padres need starting pitching. Carter Stewart Jr could need a new team after a tough 2026 in NPB. Could he be the Padres’ next developmental success?

Diego Garcia of East Village Times argues that former first-round draft pick Carter Stewart Jr. would be a strong free-agent target for the San Diego Padres' starting rotation ahead of the 2027 season. With several Padres pitchers facing free agency, Garcia highlights the right-hander as an affordable, high-upside option with professional experience overseas.
Stewart spent multiple seasons in Nippon Professional Baseball pitching for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks after bypassing MLB in 2019. Garcia suggests San Diego could target Stewart with a multi-year deal similar to the contract they gave Nick Martinez in 2022.
