Preller Discusses Ethan Salas, Padres’ Catchers

San Diego Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller stated that top prospect Ethan Salas will face competition for playing time behind the plate in 2027. Salas made his MLB debut last month, appearing in 16 games and recording 40 plate appearances. Preller emphasized that no player is guaranteed a starting role as the organization focuses on competing for a championship.

Salas is expected to compete alongside catchers Luis Campusano and Freddy Fermin. Campusano posted a 127 wRC+ across 71 games in 2026, while Fermin delivered elite defense with +8 Defensive Runs Saved. Together, Campusano and Fermin are projected to earn a combined $4.3 million through arbitration, providing experienced depth.
