Alex McCoy’s massive AFL exit velocities are drawing attention. The Padres’ next challenge is helping that raw power play against better pitching.

San Diego Padres prospect Alex McCoy is drawing significant attention in the Arizona Fall League with historic exit velocities. Playing for Peoria, McCoy hit a 118.2 mph, 435-foot home run that ranks fourth in AFL Statcast history since 2015, alongside a 110.9 mph double and a two-homer game.
Signed as an undrafted free agent from Hofstra in July 2024, the outfielder has four homers and 17 strikeouts in 39 at-bats. Writer Tremayne Person argues the Padres should develop McCoy's plate discipline and test him defensively at first base rather than trading him.
