Sam McDowell, the hard-throwing left-hander the San Francisco Giants acquired in one of the most lopsided deals in franchise history, died Monday at his home in The Villages, Florida.
Former San Francisco Giants and Cleveland pitcher Sam McDowell died Monday at his home in The Villages, Florida, at age 84. Nicknamed "Sudden Sam," the hard-throwing left-hander was a six-time All-Star who spent 15 seasons in Major League Baseball, amassing 2,453 career strikeouts.
McDowell was acquired by the Giants in November 1971 in a trade that sent future Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry to Cleveland. Over his 15-year career, McDowell led the American League in strikeouts five times before later working as an addiction counselor following his retirement.
