SF Giants manager Tony Vitello has been compared to former 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula. Is it a fair comparison?

Writer Nick San Miguel argues that the SF Giants' hiring of Tony Vitello shares uncomfortable similarities with the San Francisco 49ers' hire of Jim Tomsula in 2015. After a difficult 2026 rookie campaign under Vitello, public opinion remains split between fans who wanted him dismissed and those who believe he was hindered by a flawed roster.
San Miguel notes that unlike Tomsula, who was fired after a single 5-11 season, Vitello is being retained by president of baseball operations Buster Posey for 2027. The writer suggests that while the parallels are currently concerning, Vitello still has an opportunity to disprove the comparison if the team rebounds.
