The Seattle Mariners have claimed first baseman and outfielder Michael Toglia off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds in their first move of the offseason. The 28-year-old switch-hitter, who grew up locally in Gig Harbor, missed the majority of the 2026 season following surgery to repair a dislocated right shoulder and torn labrum suffered while making a diving catch.
Toglia was originally drafted 23rd overall by the Colorado Rockies in 2019 and carries a career .198/.275/.384 slash line across 1,095 major league plate appearances. Writer John Trupin notes that while Toglia has struggled with strikeouts, the Mariners are betting on his raw power, top-tier bat speed, and hard-hit metrics to help him establish consistency at the major league level.
