The welterweight champion was expected to defend his belt early next year…

UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev will not defend his belt in January, prompting the promotion to confirm an unexpected interim title fight for UFC 336. Top contenders Carlos Prates and Michael Morales are officially scheduled to clash for the interim welterweight championship in Toronto on January 30.
Prates was initially targeted to fight Makhachev, but the champion turned down the date and reportedly plans to return after Ramadan. UFC CEO Dana White criticized the delay, while Makhachev's coach Javier Mendez denied that a bout with Prates was ever officially set.
